In case you forgot, 2021 was the last year of production for the STI model. Since then, we’ve only had the Subaru WRX and its countless variants. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the model is more popular than ever and most people are quite satisfied with it.
Still, it’s hard not to wonder what the STI version would have become—especially with the arrival of the new generation.
Plenty of Rumors
This isn’t the first time rumors about the STI’s return have surfaced in recent years. The Japanese automaker has even hinted at the possibility of an electric model.
Earlier this week, Subaru released a rather revealing image of a sporty sedan with a massive hood scoop. That alone was enough to set the internet on fire.
Needless to say, nothing official has been confirmed by the Japanese automaker, which seems content to sit back and watch the rumors swirl around this mysterious car.
STI S210
Earlier this year, Subaru introduced a very intriguing concept: the Subaru STI S210. It’s a performance vehicle limited to just 500 units. The car promises breathtaking performance thanks to its heavily tuned powertrain. With several small upgrades, engineers managed to squeeze 296 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque from the turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.
One thing is certain: the announcement of this ultra-exclusive new model sparked a lot of buzz online and across social media. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if this were the very thing that motivated Subaru to revisit the idea of a future STI version of the WRX. In any case, we’ll have to wait until this fall to learn more.
